MacKay’s guitar arpeggios were effortless, while at times he was able to make even his electric guitar resemble the requinto prevalent on SpiderBeetleBee. MacKay and Walker were the righteous headliners, transitioning seamlessly from the quiet to the loud. Plus, MacKay and Walker were accompanied by visuals from frequent collaborator Kim Alpert. Besides MacKay & Walker, who earlier this year released their second collaborative album SpiderBeetleBee(which we broke down last month), there were improvisational jazz artists Jaimie Branch and Ben LaMar Gay, Branch fresh off of her much acclaimed Fly Or Die album, Forest Management, the solo project of ambient artist John Daniel, and none other than Tortoise’s Doug McCombs spinning records before and after the show and between sets. The night was, though, most importantly, a celebration of some great Chicago artists. Fine by me: There’s no better way to escape the same asinine Christmas songs every year than to go see some improvisational freak-outs. There was nothing holiday-related at all about Bill MacKay & Ryley Walker’s 2nd annual Hideout holiday concert, save for the occasional goofy bad Santa Claus joke from Walker.
